Learning Through Improv Helped Levi Gain Confidence

Levi is a student from Minnetonka High School who is now at The SAIL (Students Achieving Independent Life) Transition Program, a post high school special education transition program.

He participates in MNprov. Here is how he describes the experience, in his own words:

What is it like? What do you do?

It was and is fun! We play different games of sorts. For example, we do the "One Word Story," where the first person would say a word to start a sentence, then the next person would say the next word of the sentence, and so on, so that every person would say a word to build a sentence. And then there would be more sentences like that until we built a whole story. Most of them were pretty crazy stories!

Did you have a favorite improv activity?

We played a game called, "Sorry I Was Late." This game has a person get up in front of the group and start by saying, "Sorry I was late." Then they go on to explain why, by basing their reason on the plot of a movie. That's a favorite of mine because I like a lot of movies.

What did you learn about yourself by participating?

I didn't necessarily learn something about myself that I didn't already know, but I got to do things I had learned in my theater classes and realized how much I enjoy these kind of games and improvising in general. And being silly.

In what way are you different because of the MNprov experience?

Maybe I’m a little more confident.

What did you learn about the classmates who participated?

Some of them struggled with some of the games and some did really well. It was interesting to see what was difficult for each of us.

What did you like about the instructor?

He engages with the students well and is non-judgmental. He is very nice.

What else would you like people to know about how MNprov was helpful to you?

MNprov is a really nice break in my day.
